Administration of School/College Hostels

1) Objectives of Hostels

Tamilnadu Government has run 1354 Hostels near Schools and Colleges with the aim of creating an educational environment with all facilities for Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities and Minority students. Free Boarding and Lodging are provided to the Students staying in these hostels.

2) Details of Hostels

    • There are 1081 hotels run for School Students and 273 hostels run for College students.
    • Total of 86514 students are benefiting from staying. Among these 63189 were School Students and 23325 were college Students.

Eligibility Criteria

School Hostel

  1. Students should be studying in classes from 4th standard to 12th standard.
  2. Annual Parental income should be not exceed Rs.2, 00,000/-. From the year 2021-22
  3. The Student should be residing at a distance of more than 8 kilometers from the educational Institutions. This condition is not applicable to Girl Students.

College Hostel

  1. Students should be studying in Diploma, U.G/P.G. courses.
  2. Annual Parental income should not exceed Rs.2, 00,000/-.

From the year 2021-22

  1. The Student should be residing at a distance of more than 8 kilometers from the educational Institutions. This condition is not applicable to Girl Students.

Admission for children of Tamil Refugees who reside in camps

5 additional seats have been sanctioned in addition to the sanctioned strength in all the hostels to accommodate children of Tamil refugees who reside in camps.

Admission for Differently Abled Persons

4% of seats are allotted in each hostel to accommodate the differently abled students.

Admission for rescued child labour

Rescued bonded labour children are admitted in the hostels at any time without any conditions till they complete their course.

Admission for children of labourers who are working in plantation in Kerala border and adjacent to Theni district

Poor children of labourers having birth place in Tamil Nadu and working in plantations in Kerala border and adjacent to Theni district, have been exempted from production of Community and Income certificates for hostel admission. They are admitted in BC/MBC/DNC hostels situated in Theni district based on the declaration of their parents.

(d) Eggs and Bananas

Five eggs are given in a week along with daily menu. Accordingly
20 Eggs are given for a boarder in a month. At the same time banana are supplied to those who do not take egg.

(e) Evening Snacks

Sundal and Coffee / Tea are supplied in BC/MBC/DNC and MW Hostels during the evening hours.

Facilities available for hostel students

  1. Career guidance programme are conducted to create awareness among the 10th std, 12th std and college hostel students about its various job opportunities available and make them employable. The programme is implemented through the Employment and Training Department.
  2. One English and two Tamil dailies are subscribed for each hostel.
  3. The boarders of hostels studying upto XII standard are supplied with all text books free of cost by the Department of School Education.
  4. Special Guides are provided at free of cost to the boarders studying in 10th and 12th standard to improve their performance in public examinations
  5. Four sets of uniforms are given to the hostel boarders studying from IV to X standard, as per the colour and pattern adopted under Noon meal scheme from the year 2013-14.
  6. Colour television, play materials, water purifier, book shelves, wet grinder, steam based cooking boilers, mixer, napkin incinerator, fire extinguishers, idly steamer, library books and electric insect destroyer are supplied to the hostels. In addition, inverter, reference books and two tier bunk cots are supplied to the college hostels
  7. Mats, bed sheets, jamukalam, stainless steel plates and tumblers are provided to all hostel boarders. Wollen sweaters are provided to the boarders of hostels located in hill stations.Provision of mats and bedsheets to the boarders has been regularized from the year 2013-14.
  8. Three medical checkups are conducted for all hostel boarders and Kallar Reclamation School students every year.

Three medical checkup camps are conducted for all hostel boarders and Kallar Reclamation School students every year.(July, October, January)

Food charges

  • Rs.1000/- p.m. per head (for 10 months) is provided to the students who are staying in school hostels as increase in food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.
  • Rs.1100/- p.m. per head (for 10 months) is provided to the students who are staying in college hostels as increase in food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.
  • Boiled eggs are provided at the rate of one per student per day for five days in a week. Bananas are given to the boarders who do not take eggs.
  • Mutton and chicken are respectively provided on the first and third Wednesday and second and fourth Wednesday every month.
  • Sundal and Sukkumalli Coffee/ Palm Jaggery Tea are provided to the boarders, daily in the evening.

Special food Items during festivals

  • Special Food items are provided to the inmates of the BC/MBC/ & MW Dept.
  • Rs.40/- per head is provided to the students who are staying in school hostels as increase in Special food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.
  • Rs.80/- per head is provided to the students who are staying in College hostels as increase in Special food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.

Logistics Materials provided for Hostels

Colour television, play materials, water purifier, book shelves, wet grinder, steam based cooking boilers, mixer, napkin incinerator, fire extinguishers, idly steamer, library books and electric insect destroyer are supplied to the hostels. In addition, inverter, reference books and two tier bunk cots are supplied to the college hostels.
